How Long Does Drain Cleaning Take? A Plumber's Honest Answer

The honest answer: about an hour for a single clogged fixture, 1–2 hours for a blocked main sewer line, and 2–3 hours for hydro-jetting with a camera inspection. Any plumber who quotes you a time without asking what's clogged and where is guessing. Here's how the real numbers break down — in time and in dollars — and the situations that make a "quick snake job" take all afternoon.

Typical Times and Prices, Job by Job

Single-fixture clog (sink, tub, toilet) — about an hour, $150–$250. We cable from the nearest accessible cleanout or the fixture itself. If the clog is in the fixture's own trap arm, it can be done in 30 minutes; hair-and-soap tub clogs and grease-packed kitchen lines sit at the longer end.

Main sewer line cabling — 1–2 hours, $295–$475. This is the "every drain in the house is backing up" call. Time depends heavily on cleanout access (more on that below) and how far down the line the blockage sits.

Hydro-jetting the main line — 2–3 hours, $450–$800. A 4,000 PSI jet scours the full pipe diameter clean instead of punching a hole through the clog. We camera the line on the same trip — the $245–$395 camera inspection is free with jetting — so you see exactly what condition your pipe is in.

Roots in the line — 2–4 hours, $650–$1,100 for cutting, jetting, and camera. Common in older Cape Coral and Fort Myers neighborhoods with big oaks and ficus. One 1976 Fort Myers home had a 60-foot cast iron run with two oak roots grown in; jetting plus a root cutter cleared it, and the camera flagged one cracked joint to watch.

What Makes It Take Longer

No accessible cleanout. If your home doesn't have one (or it's buried under landscaping), we may need to pull a toilet or go through a roof vent — add an hour. Many older SWFL homes are missing them; installing one during the visit saves money on every future call.

The clog that isn't a clog. If the cable keeps finding "soft" blockages that return within weeks, the real problem is usually grease buildup, root intrusion, or a bellied section of pipe holding water. That's a camera diagnosis, not a guess — and it's why we scope repeat offenders instead of charging you for a third cabling.

Collapsed or separated pipe. No amount of cabling fixes a structural failure. The camera tells us in minutes, and you get an honest conversation about repair options instead of an open-ended "cleaning."

When to Stop Snaking and Start Jetting

Our rule: the second time the same line clogs within a year, it's a jetting-and-camera conversation. One Lehigh Acres customer had been paying another plumber three times a year to cable the same kitchen line. We jetted it, scoped it, found a low spot trapping grease — it hasn't backed up in 14 months. Cheaper than the fourth cabling would have been. More on causes and prevention in our clogged drains guide.

Same-Day Service, Honest Clock

Most drain calls across Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Lehigh Acres get same-day service in regular hours, and we handle 24/7 emergencies when every drain in the house is backing up. After-hours work carries a $95–$150 surcharge — which we aim to never charge, because most jobs fit in business hours.
