No environment in Lee County is harder on residential piping than Sanibel Island. Salt-laden air attacks copper from the outside while chlorinated water works on it from the inside, and Hurricane Ian's 2022 storm surge pushed saltwater into wall cavities, under slabs, and through the exposed pipe runs beneath elevated homes across the island. Copper that took saltwater immersion during Ian is corroding on an accelerated clock — we regularly open walls in Shell Harbor and Beachview homes and find green-crusted pipe that looks decades older than it is.
