Water Softener vs Water Filter: Which Does Your Lee County Home Need?

The Hard Water Problem in Southwest Florida

If you live in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, or anywhere in Lee County, your water is hard. Hard water contains high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium, which cause white buildup on faucets, dry skin and hair, soap that doesn't lather well, and shortened appliance lifespans.

The question isn't whether you need water treatment — it's which type.

What a Water Softener Does

A water softener removes calcium and magnesium through a process called ion exchange. Salt-based softeners swap hardness minerals for sodium ions, producing "soft" water that:

  • Eliminates scale buildup on fixtures, water heaters, and pipes
  • Makes soap and shampoo lather better
  • Extends the life of your water heater and appliances
  • Prevents mineral deposits inside your plumbing

Best for: Most Lee County homes on city water. Softeners address the primary water quality issue in our area — extreme hardness.

What a Water Filter Does

Water filters remove contaminants like chlorine, sediment, bacteria, and chemicals. Different filter types target different problems:

  • Carbon filters: Remove chlorine, taste, and odor
  • Sediment filters: Trap sand, rust, and particles
  • Reverse osmosis (RO): Remove nearly all dissolved contaminants
  • UV filters: Kill bacteria and viruses

Best for: Homes on well water, homes wanting better-tasting drinking water, or as a complement to a water softener.

Do You Need Both?

For most Southwest Florida homes, we recommend a water softener as the primary system. If you also want purified drinking water, adding a reverse osmosis system under your kitchen sink gives you the best of both worlds — soft water throughout the house and purified drinking water at the tap.

Homes in Lehigh Acres and eastern Lee County on well water often benefit from both a softener and a whole-home sediment filter.

How Much Does Water Treatment Cost?

In Southwest Florida, expect to pay:

  • Water softener: $1,500–$3,500 installed
  • Whole-home carbon filter: $800–$2,000 installed
  • Under-sink RO system: $300–$800 installed
  • Softener + RO combo: $2,000–$4,000 installed
